This Symposium held on Sunday, March 14 at the PSTC from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free lunch provided - will present the following three (3) programs:

  1. Leadership, Accountability, Culture, and Knowledge (LACK) – Is your department on the path to a LODD? This compelling presentation by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation examines the root causes of LODDs and the role leadership, accountability, culture, and knowledge play as it influences the result. Many fire departments across the United States “LACK” the right stuff to prevent them from being on a path to a line of duty death, with Leadership, Accountability, Culture, and Knowledge being the elements that need to be addressed and managed in those environments. Presentation time: 4 hours.

  2. “Functions of Command” – This presentation is built on Chief Alan Brunacini’s “8 Functions of Command” and includes a unique segment on how ICs can “EATT” the command elephant one bite at a time and discussion on John Boyd’s OODA Loops. Includes interactive exercises. Presentation time 2-2.5 hours.

  3. The First Five Minutes for First Due – This two-hour presentation highlights the impact of the first arriving officer’s actions, their role in organizing incident scenes, discusses strategies for establishing a standard mental model, introduces the concepts of strategic grounding and tactical patience, and introduces OODA Loops to company officers.
