Prepare to be an EMT! The Emergency Medical Technician course will develop competencies in the following skills: Bag-valve-mask ventilation of an apneic patient, Bleeding control/shock management, Cardiac arrest management/AED, Joint dislocation immobilization, Long bone fracture immobilization, Mouth-to-mouth ventilation with supplemental oxygen, Patient assessment/management of a trauma patient and a medical patient, Spinal immobilization (both seated and supine patient), Supplemental oxygen administration to a breathing patient, Traction splinting, and Upper airway adjuncts and suction. The curriculum follows the new National EMS Education Standards. Upon successful completion of the course, you may be eligible to take the state certification exam and the National Registry Exam (Registry exam fees not included). Course Requirements: Be at least 16 years old, Possess the physical and mental abilities as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of Health Function Job Description, Complete 10 patient contact experiences (supplement portion of the course in which student is responsible for, details provided first night of class. All patient contact requirements are at applicant's expense to include. Additional requirements may be required for EMS preceptors. Precepting at hospitals, will require addition requirements; additional hospital precepting requirements are the responsibility of the student’s expense to meet.), success complete American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course (provided in class), Complete PA State Fire Academy-approved Hazardous Materials Awareness course (free online), and Obtain certification for ICS 100 and NIMS 700 (both free online). Course Requirements:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Complete an FBI Fingerprinting background check (This is a Department of Health - Bureau of Emergency Medical Services requirement for all EMT students as of January 1, 2026). It must be less-than 90-days old at the time of the EMS application, which is normally completed by the student post PSTC registration and approval, but no less than 2-weeks after the class starts. PSTC is recommending a window of 60-days prior to class starting, providing a 30-day window post class for any issues with the process. Thus, about 60-days prior to the start of class, you should complete this background check. Each EMT class provides the recommended dates to start working on this clearance. Recommended dates and directions provided at PSTC EMT website. The individual applying for certification is responsible for all expenses related to the FBI background check.

- Complete PA State Fire Academy (PSFA)-approved Hazardous Materials Awareness course. This requirement is not part of the course curriculum and must be obtained outside of class; it is available online for free (Explained first night of class). Currently trained individuals with a current PSFA HMA, HMO or R is acceptable; must be current by the end of the class.
- Obtain certification for ICS 100 , IS 200, NIMS 700, & Traffic Incident Management (TIM). These programs are not part of the course curriculum and must be obtained outside of class; they are available online for free (Explained first night of class).
- Register with the Department of Health EMS Application System.
- Directions for obtaining FBI fingerprinting, HMA and other online programs, to include Department of Health registration available at PSTC EMT website.
