The Successful Short-Staffed Engine
Today’s fire service faces staffing shortages, rising call volumes, and complex incident demands. The Successful Short-Staffed Engine is a 16-hour program designed to help firefighters maximize the effectiveness of a two- or three-person engine company. This course focuses on efficient fireground operations, rapid water application, and critical support functions during high-risk incidents.
Students will practice tactics for fire attack, rescue, victim management, search, and occupant removal in single-family residential fires. Through realistic scenarios and practical skills, participants will learn how to prioritize tasks, use limited resources, and operate as a coordinated team. The program is designed for firefighters responding to working structure fires with reported entrapment under live-fire conditions. By the end of the course, students will better understand how disciplined teamwork and sound decision-making improve firefighter effectiveness and victim survivability.. Prerequisites: Minimum age: 18+, and ELIF or EBM. Student Equipment & Supplies: Pen/Pencil, Notebook; TOG, SCBA and spare cylinder required. The course is a Non-PSFA CEU program. Total hours = 16, CEUs = 1.6. Min/Max for class: 12 / 30.
